How to apply for a National ID Of Nepal? The crowd has increased in the passport department after the electronic passport was made mandatory for National ID and e-passports. The increase in the number of people in the passport department is due to the provision of applying for e-passports only in limited districts. The department has so far made arrangements for live enrollment for e-passports from 53 districts.

The government has been distributing electronic passports in place of machine-readable passports since November 2021. National identity card has been made mandatory for e-passport. Despite increasing the number of passports issued by the department, the crowd at the Tripureshwor-based office has not decreased. The department, which had been distributing 700 passports daily till a few days ago, has increased the number to over 1,000.

The department has clarified that electronic passports will not be issued to the holders of old passports for a period of one year or more.

How to apply for a passport?

An e-passport cannot be issued without a national identity card. Whether the National Identity Card has been activated or not can be ascertained by calling the hotline number of the registration department. The registration department has also made an arrangement to get the information about activating the national identity card by sending a message on Viber and WhatsApp. The process of live enrollment of e-passport should start only after confirmation of a national identity card. 

In which districts live enrollment can be done for an electronic passport?

The department has informed that bookings have been opened for live enrollment in those districts. The department has informed us that final preparations are being made for booking after the completion of connection work in Kavre and Tanahu. In addition, stations are being set up in other districts on a daily basis.

How long does it take to get an electronic passport in the department?
Under normal circumstances, an e-passport is issued within two to three days from the date of live enrollment. However, the time should be booked online and the details should be matched with the national identity card. An employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed that due to the high pressure and cowardice in the department at present, it is not possible to bring back the booking. The staff suggests estimating the time to go abroad and booking time for every possible enrollment.

In case of non-verification of citizenship, national identity card, or old passport, additional time should be spent on the investigation. If the image does not match ICAO standards, the system will not accept it. He said that it would take more time to get the passport after the system itself rejected the details. The department has requested not to book air tickets for foreign countries without obtaining a passport. After the passport is ready, the information is sent through SMS. 

What is the fee for an electronic and machine-readable passport?
The department has fixed the fee for electronic and machine-readable passports equally. There is a difference in the 66-page simple passport fee.

Before the distribution of e-passports, the department had earlier provided 1/2/3 service. As per the revised passport regulations, express service has been established to be issued within two working days. 12,000 passport fee will be provided within two days after the process is completed. Five thousand has been fixed as per the pre-determined fee for a 34-page passport when applying to the District Administration Office.

Applying for a 66-page passport will cost the department 20,000 rupees. There is a separate fee for taking passports from diplomatic missions abroad. Different revenue will have to be paid in case of loss, torn and child under 10 years of age. 

How long does it take to get an electronic passport after doing live enrollment in the district?
The department has stated that passports will be provided in all three districts of Kathmandu Valley within a week. The department claims that passports will be provided within 15 days in the districts around Mahendra Highway outside Kathmandu and in the districts with air facilities. The department has also clarified that those who receive passports from the district administration office will receive SMS.

What to do if you get a message that your application has been rejected?
The department has requested to contact the rejection counter in case the application is rejected. If the reason for rejection is known then you have to do the prescribed work and re-enrol live. The department has requested to be careful while filling the details in the form as once the submitted form cannot be revised due to security reasons.
