Nepal Telecom will implement the plan by budget ‘e-SIM platform’ in its annual program for the coming Fiscal Year 2078/79. Accordingly, the company is preparing to import a total of 8 million SIMs including e-SIMs within the next fiscal year.

Minu Pradhan, director of the company, informed that a tender has already been issued for 7.5 million SIM cards. “The rest of the e-SIMs are our new plan,” she said.

The issue of setting up its own platform for e-SIM or purchasing from outside is under discussion, said Dilliram Adhikari, managing director of Nepal Telecom. That is why the company is preparing to launch e-SIM in the coming fiscal year.

However, mobile service providers in some countries of the world have already developed a system to support eSIM. Even in India, companies like Airtel and Jio have started providing such support.

Apple’s iPad Pro, Apple Watch Series Three, Watch Series Four, Series Five, iPhone X and XS Max, iPhone XR, and iPhone Eleven and Twelve Series devices support eSIM. Google’s Pixel Two, Google Pixel Three, Pixel Three XL and Pixel Four, Pixel Four XL, Pixel Four also have eSIM support.

In addition, Samsung Galaxy S20, S20 Plus, S2020 Ultra also support eSIM. Similarly, Samsung’s foldable phone Z series, Microsoft Windows 10, Microsoft Surface Duo, Huawei P40, and other devices also have eSIM support.

E-SIM can be used to transfer data from one phone to another, and the data available on the eSIM can be changed as needed. This means you can connect to another mobile service provider’s network without having a SIM card. Another advantage of this is that no separate space is required on the mobile device to hold the SIM card.

In this case, smartwatches and fitness devices can also be connected to the mobile network. Thus, the e-SIM embedded in the device is expected to completely replace the physical SIM card in the future.
